Spring in the Savonlinna region

Saimaa ringed seal excursions
Spring is a beautiful time to visit the Savonlinna region. It is also the best time to spot the endangered Saimaa ringed seal that lives only in Lake Saimaa. In May-June, the ringed seals spend long periods of time lying and drying their fur on the rocks along the shores.
A traditional, guided Saimaa ringed seal cruise is a great opportunity to observe the seals and hear about their life and protection. For example SaimaaHoliday Oravi and Nature Hotel & Spa Resort Järvisydän arrange Saimaa ringed seal excursions where you, in the spring, have a high chance of spotting one of these approximately 430 seals remaining in Lake Saimaa. In Oravi, you can stay overnight in a private villa or in a cozy apartment hotel, and Järvisydän provides a wide range of accommodation options.
From the city of Savonlinna, the Saimaa ringed seal cruises are provided by Savonlinna Cruises.
Canoeing and kayaking
Open waters, rocky inlets and labyrinthine archipelago – when it comes to canoeing and kayaking, can you ask for more? May-June is the best time for this activity, and Oravi and Järvisydän are also great starting points for canoeing and kayaking excursions. You can book a guided excursion, or rent a canoe or a kayak for your own trip. Canoeing and kayaking is also possible in the Savonlinna city centre, since the whole city is built on islands
