Travel | Finland’s Southern Lakeland | LAKE SAIMAA | WINTER

Winter that whispers

Glide on glassy ice, warm up well, sleep deeply – repeat. Meet the people, taste local delicacies and explore places that make Saimaa effortless in winter.

Alongside the magic of Lapland, Finland’s southern lakeland offers a fresh winter to discover: just a few hours (≈4) from Helsinki by rail or road or about 1 hour by air. Lake Saimaa feels close yet wonderfully unhurried, where winter unfolds at a human scale.

Getting to Lake Saimaa in winter

Lake Saimaa and the Savonlinna region sit in Finland’s southern Lakeland, within easy reach of Helsinki. Travel time from the capital region is typically around 4 hours by train or car, or about 1 hour by domestic flight on weekdays. There will be a break in flight connections between 19 December and 19 January. Tickets are available at Norppa Aero.

Once you arrive, distances between key winter spots are pleasantly short. Punkaharju, Savonlinna, Oravi and Rantasalmi form a compact cluster of lakeside villages and resorts, making it easy to combine several places in one trip – for example:

  • Savonlinna – Punkaharju: around 30 minutes by car
  • Savonlinna – Oravi / Kanava Resort: around 45–60 minutes by car
  • Oravi – Järvisydän / Rantasalmi area: around 45–60 minutes by car

Winter driving & getting around

You can rent a car either directly at Helsinki Airport or in Savonlinna (e.g. via Hertz). It is also possible to travel by public transport from Helsinki Airport with the Finnish rail operator VR, and then continue your journey in the Lakeland region.

Please note that most of the places featured here are best reached by car or organised transfer, as there is no continuous public transport connection between all partners. In winter, we recommend allowing some flexibility in your schedule and always checking local weather and road conditions in advance.
