Punkaharju is one of Finland’s most iconic national landscapes: narrow ridges, tall pines and lakes on both sides. From May to October, the area shifts from fresh spring green to deep summer and finally glowing autumn colours. Kruunupuisto’s historic jugend accommodation, spa and lakeside sauna offer a soft landing after days spent on the ridge trails.
Highlight: Book a morning sauna with breakfast in Inkeritalo sauna for a unique sauna experience.
Quick services: Historic lakeside hotel • Spa & saunas • Ridge walking routes • Restaurant • Day spa treatments

Harjun Portti is the active traveller’s base on Punkaharju ridge. Rent an e-bike, gravel bike, canoe or kayak, follow the ancient road and forest tracks along the narrow ridge and stop to explore the Arboretum’s over 100 tree species. After your ride, walk or paddle, return to the base and enjoy a well-earned meal or coffee break in the restaurant. In summer the restaurant hosts karaoke evenings and other themed nights.
Tip: Plan a full ridge loop: start at Harjun Portti, cycle or walk via the Arboretum and Museum Lusto, then circle back for a relaxed late lunch on the terrace.

Oravi Village – Gateway to Islands, Kayaking & Seal Safaris
Oravi is a cosy canal village perfectly placed between Linnansaari and Kolovesi National Parks. In spring (May–mid-June), it’s the starting point for guided Saimaa ringed seal tours, when the rare seals rest on warm rocks. Summer brings sunrise nature-watching safaris and long days outdoors, while autumn slows into quiet colours and peaceful shores.
Oravi Village is Saimaa’s main kayaking hub: weekly beginner courses in summer, kayak rentals for experienced paddlers and full overnight gear for multi-day trips. From here you can paddle to Linnansaari’s main island, hike to Linnavuori hill – one of the lake’s finest viewpoints – and return to easy accommodation in apartment-hotel rooms or lakeside cottages in the village. Oravi is also a top spot for anglers – easy gear rentals, expert guides and some of Saimaa’s best fishing waters right at your doorstep.
Tip: For true nature enthusiasts, spend a night in Linnansaari National Park in a tent, a tentsile or a wilderness hut.
Quick services: Guided seal and fishing tours • Equipment rental • Apartment-hotel & cottages • Kayak/canoe rentals and guided tours • Restaurant • Shop

Linnansaari National Park – Island Hiking in Every Season
Linnansaari is the heart of Saimaa’s island wilderness. A short boat ride from Oravi takes you to the main island, where a 3-hour loop trail leads past viewpoints, cliffs and quiet forest sections. In spring, birds and fresh air dominate; in midsummer, the lake invites swimming; in autumn, the forest glows with colour.
Tip: Order a picnic basket from Oravi and experience an outdoor lunch in the National Park.
Quick services: Boat transfers from Oravi • Marked loop trails • Picnic spots & viewpoints • Island wilderness atmosphere • Accessible path and transfer • Sauna and outdoor kitchen

Kolovesi National Park – Kayaking in Deep Silence
Kolovesi is one of Finland’s quietest protected areas. Motorboats are not allowed, so self-guided kayaking is wonderfully peaceful – just paddle strokes, birds and the echo of your own voice between high rock walls. From May to October, the atmosphere shifts from misty spring light to warm summer evenings and finally autumn reflections on still water. Kolovesi is a place to feel far away without needing extreme skills. On the cliffs you can still see ancient rock paintings and feel the spirit of the lake.
Tip: From the base Oravi it takes about an 1h drive to Kolovesi. Stop on the way in Enonkoski. Experience the small village atmosphere and have a lunch in local Café Maitolaituri.
Quick services: Self-guided kayak routes • Motor-free waters • Dramatic cliffs & narrow straits • Ideal for photography and slow adventure

Getting to Lake Saimaa in the open-water season
Lake Saimaa and the Savonlinna region sit in Finland’s southern lakeland, within easy reach of Helsinki. Travel time from the capital region is typically around 4 hours by train or car, or about 1 hour by domestic flight on weekdays with Norppa Aero (some holiday seasons might effect on schedules).
In summer, driving in Finland is straightforward: roads are quiet, traffic is light and wayfinding is simple. Having your own car lets you follow your interests – stopping at viewpoints, farm shops or small villages whenever something catches your eye. It’s also the easiest way to combine several Saimaa highlights in one trip.
Once you arrive, distances between key areas are pleasantly short. Punkaharju, Savonlinna, Oravi and Rantasalmi form a compact cluster of lakeside villages and resorts, making it easy to build flexible itineraries, for example:
- Savonlinna – Punkaharju: around 30 minutes by car
- Savonlinna – Oravi / Kanava Resort: around 45–60 minutes by car
- Oravi – Rantasalmi / Järvisydän area: around 45–60 minutes by car
Summer driving & public transport
You can rent a car either directly at Helsinki Airport or in Savonlinna from Herz. It is also possible to travel by public transport from Helsinki Airport with the Finnish rail operator VR, and then continue your journey in the lakeland region.
Please note that many of the places featured here are best reached by car or organised transfer, as there is no continuous public transport connection between all partners. In summer, however, roads are easy to drive and scenery along the way is very much part of the experience.
